1ª domanda:

Buongiorno Sig. Tasos.

Partiamo raccontando al pubblico di lingua italiana che lei gestisce una pagina FB sugli Charlotte Hornets (https://www.facebook.com/BuzzCityGreece) per il “pubblico” greco.

Ci racconta qualcosa su di lei, cosa fa nella vita, i suoi hobby e perché tra tutte le squadre NBA ha scelto proprio i Charlotte Hornets?

1ª risposta:

“Ho 17 anni, nel mio tempo libero, di solito guardo programmi TV o guardo partite.

Prima della chiusura ovviamente anch’io uscivo più spesso ma ora non è la mia priorità.

Ho scelto gli Hornets per via di Kemba.

Walker è il mio giocatore preferito anche in questo momento e continuo a supportarlo anche se ora è un giocatore dei Celtics.”

2ª domanda:

E’ sempre affascinante dal mio punto di vista andare a scoprire il punto di vista di una cultura differente anche se “vicina”.

Nei miei articoli ogni tanto inserisco storie di mitologia greca come esempi e trait d’union per descrivere le particolari situazioni momentanee di Charlotte.

Da fuori vediamo le bellezze architettoniche e paesaggistiche ma ovviamente il panorama è cambiato.

Oltre all’architettura, è rimasto qualcosa di quella cultura in Grecia o il pensiero è modellato sul mercato dal modello anglosassone?

Come sta la gente realmente in Grecia in generale oggi?

“Anche se oggigiorno la maggior parte degli Stati è fortemente influenzata dal modello anglosassone, il temperamento greco esiste ancora e credo che esisterà sempre anche se saremo più influenzati dal modello anglosassone.

Oggigiorno in Grecia ci sono molti diversi tipi di persone.

Suppongo che la città dalla quale provieni legata alla situazione finanziaria siano i fattori principali per i greci.

Credo che ci siano molte persone non progressiste in Grecia, razziste, ultraconservatrici, ecc., tuttavia ritengo siano un 5-10%, quindi non rappresentano la nostra maggioranza.”

3ª domanda:

Un tempo, un istrionico allenatore di calcio chiamato Franco Scoglio, alla guida del Genoa utilizzò la definizione di “popolo rossoblu” per unire in un abbraccio universale tutti i tifosi del Grifone che amassero quei colori.

Ecco… cosa ne pensa la fetta del popolo teal & purple greco degli Hornets di questi ultimi anni?

Ha speranza per il futuro o è rassegnato a vedere la squadra per agape?

“Per come la vedono nella nostra pagina greca, i fan degli Hornets sono fiduciosi che approderemo almeno ai playoff quest’anno o nel peggiore dei casi accadrà l’anno prossimo.

Personalmente mi unisco al coro ma anche se non dovessimo riuscire ad avere successo con i LaMelo e i Gordon sono sicuro che questa squadra sarà divertente da guardare e credo che alla maggior parte dei fan degli Hornets, non solo in Grecia ma in tutto il mondo, non importi primariamente se otteniamo qualcosa quindi immagino che la risposta alla tua domanda sia che sì, naturalmente vorremmo una squadra competitiva e sì, ci sentiamo fiduciosi per il futuro ma anche se alla fine non dovessimo ottenere successo, saremo sempre insieme alla squadra.”

4ª domanda:

In Italia gli Hornets sono una squadra di nicchia con pochi fan.

Come sono considerati in Grecia?

Hanno più appeal o sono sempre le solite squadre (Celtics, i Lakers come esempio) o le emergenti (Warriors, Heat) ad avere più seguito?

4ª risposta:

“Qui in Grecia si va bene sulla base del proprio successo.

I Lakers hanno la più grande fan base qui in Grecia ma credo che la maggior parte di loro siano dei “ronin” (liberamente tradotto da me dalla risposta originale – che parlava di bandwagoner – per descrivere coloro che errano da un team all’altro come quei samurai che servivano il Signore di turno).

Anche i Celtics e i Bulls hanno un grande seguito qua quindi suppongo che la maggior parte delle persone supporti le solite squadre.

Rispetto ad altre squadre mediocri come Kings e Timberwolves che non hanno nemmeno una pagina greca attiva, stiamo andando piuttosto bene.

Probabilmente ci classificherei tra la ventesima e la venticinquesima posizione tra le squadre più seguite dai tifosi in Grecia.

Ovviamente è uno status basato soltanto su Facebook perché è impossibile per me sapere realmente quante persone tifano realmente ogni squadra.”

5ª domanda:

Negli anni abbiamo visto tanti giocatori europei andare oltreoceano a cercare fortuna.

In Grecia probabilmente il basket è uno degli sport più popolari.

Il derby Panathinaikos Vs Olympiakos è uno di quegli eventi che non si possono mancare.

Come mai nonostante un buonissimo livello di basket nei recenti anni solo i tre Antetokounmpo sono riusciti a fare il grande salto (per trovare il più recente dobbiamo tornare al 2014 con Papanikolaou)?

Che ne pensa di Kyriakos Rambidis (Kurt Rambis giocatore americano con passaporto greco per discendenza) che ci diede la vittoria nella prima partita contro i Bulls (di Jordan) nella prima partita tra i due team?

“La realtà è che molti anni fa, Aris e Paok erano le squadre dominanti.

L’Aris aveva Nikos Galis all’epoca, il giocatore di basket greco più forte di tutti i tempi in Grecia.

Allora il basket era molto popolare, quasi lo sport più popolare qui ma al giorno d’oggi non è nemmeno vicino ad esserlo.

Il calcio supera il basket nonostante la grande base di fan della NBA esistente e molte più persone tentano la fortuna nel calcio che nel basket.

Credo che questo sia il motivo principale (meno movimento).

Anche i fan del Panathinaikos e dell’Olympiakos non si preoccupano davvero della loro squadra di basket.

Voglio dire, entrambi prima del blocco avrebbero assistito solo a partite di Eurolega o agli scontri tra di loro.

In realtà Kostas Koufos ha anche giocato nella NBA per i Kings fino al 2019 oltre ad avere esperienze nei Minnesota Timberwolves e nei Denver Nuggets.

Su Rambis… mi dispiace ma non ho sentito parlare di lui, dev’essere a causa della mia età.

Andrò a cercare sicuramente informazioni su di lui.”

Personalmente mi è piaciuta molto questa sincera risposta, favorisco la ricerca con un paio di video e come forse non tutti sapranno attualmente Rambis (una carriera spesa principalmente a L.A. nelle fila giallo-viola) è il senior basketball adviser dei Lakers.

6ª domanda:

Gli Hornets hanno vissuto a cavallo tra la metà degli anni novanta e gli albori del nuovo secolo il periodo più luminoso della loro breve vita ma sono passati 19 anni e le apparizioni ai PO sono state con il contagocce.

Perché secondo lei è diventato cosi difficile fare basket professionale a buoni livelli in North Carolina?

“Credo che si siano prese decisioni terribili in tutti questi anni.

Pessime scelte al primo turno, giocatori che hanno lasciato la città a causa del tetto salariale (vedi Jeremy Lamb), probabilmente i peggiori contratti della NBA, inoltre, siamo un piccolo mercato e non è facile convincere le star nel venire a Charlotte.

Credo che questo sia il motivo principale per cui lottiamo per costruire una squadra competitiva.”

Let’s start by telling the Italian-speaking audience that you run a FB page on the Charlotte Hornets. Can you tell us something about you, what you do in your life, what your hobbies are and why you chose the Charlotte Hornets among all the NBA teams?

Good Morning Hornets fan.

In my free time, I usually watch TV shows or I watch sports games.

Before the lockdown I used to go out too, but now that’s not my priority.

I chose the Hornets because of Kemba.

Kemba is my favourite player even at this moment, and I continue supporting him even though he is now a Celtic.

It is always fascinating from my point of view to discover the point of view of a different culture.

In my articles, I occasionally insert some examples and trait d’union taken from the Greek mythology to describe the particular momentary situations of Charlotte.

From the outside we see the Greek architectural and landscape beauties but obviously the panorama has changed.

In addition to architecture, is there something left of that culture in Greece or is the thinking shaped on the market by the Anglo-Saxon model?

How are people really in Greece in general today?

2R)

Even though these days most countries get highly affected by the Anglo-Saxon model, the Greek temperament still exists and I believe that it will always exist even if we get more affected by the Anglo-Saxon model.

Nowadays in Greece, there are many different types of people.

I suppose the city you come from and your financial status are the main factors for Greek people.

I believe there are many not progressive people in Greece, racists, ultraconservative, etc.

However it’s like a 5-10% so it doesn’t represent all of us.

Once a histrionic football coach called Franco Scoglio, at the helm of Genoa, used the definition of “red and blue people” to unite in a universal embrace all the Grifone fans who loved those colors.

Well, what do the Greek Teal & Purple people of the Hornets think of the last few years?

Do you have hope for the future or are you resigned to seeing the team for agape?

As I see from our page, most Hornets fans in Greece are confident for us to at least make the playoffs this year or at worst case next year.

Personally, I am confident too but even if we don’t manage to succeed with LaMelo and Gordon, I am sure this team will be so fun to watch.

In Italy the Hornets are a niche team with few fans.

How are they considered in Greece?

Do they have more appeal?

Are the usual teams (Celtics, Lakers as an example) or emerging teams (Warriors, Heat) always the most popular?

4R)

I believe most Hornets fans not only in Greece, but worldwide don’t really care if we achieve something.

So I guess the answer to your question is that yes of course we want the team to be competitive, and yes we feel confident for the future, but even if in the end we don’t achieve something, we will always be behind the team.

Here in Greece, we are doing OK based on our success.

The Lakers have the biggest fan-base here in Greece, but I believe most of them are band-wagoners. The Celtics and the Bulls have a large fan-base too, so I suppose most people support the usual teams.

Compared to other mediocre teams like the Kings and the Timberwolves which don’t even have an active Greek page, we are doing pretty well.

I would probably rank us between 20-25 in fans in Greece.

Of course that’s based on Facebook, because it is impossible for me to know how many people support each team.

Over the years we have seen so many European players go overseas to seek their fortune.

In Greece basketball is probably one of the most popular sports.

The Panathinaikos Vs Olympiakos derby is one of those events that cannot be missed.

How come despite a very good level of basketball in recent years only the three Antetokounmpo have managed to make the big leap (to find the most recent one we have to go back to 2014 with Papanikolaou)?

What do you think of Kyriakos Rambidis (Kurt Rambis American player with Greek passport by descent) who gave us the victory in the first game against the Bulls (in which Jordan played) in the first game between the two teams?

The reality is that many years ago, Aris and Paok used to be the most dominant teams.

Aris had Nikos Galis at the time, the most successful basketball player in Greece of all time.

Then basketball used to be very popular, almost the most popular sport here, but nowadays it’s not even close. football tops basketball, despite the large NBA fan-base, and much more people try their luck in football than in basketball.

I believe that’s the main reason.

Even Panathinaikos and Olympiakos fans don’t really care for their basketball team.

I mean both of them prior to the lockdown would attend only Euroleague games or games between the two sides.

Kostas Koufos also played in the NBA for the Kings until 2019. He also played in Minnesota and Denver.

I’m sorry but I haven’t heard of him (about Rambis).

It must be because of my age (17 y).

I will make sure to search about him.

The Hornets lived between the mid-nineties and the dawn of the new century the brightest period of their short life but 19 years have passed and the appearances at the POs have been quite limited. Why do you think it has become so difficult to do professional basketball at a good level in North Carolina?

6R)

I believe we have made awful decisions through all these years.

Very bad first round picks, letting players leave because of cap space (for example Jeremy Lamb), probably the worst contracts in the league.

Also, we’re a small-market team and it’s not easy to convince stars to come to Charlotte.

I believe that’s the main reasons we struggle to build a competitive team.

Καλημέρα Τάσο, ας αρχίσουμε λέγοντας στο Ιταλόφωνο κοινό μας πως έχεις μια σελίδα στο Facebook για τους Hornets.

Μπορείς να μας πεις κάτι για εσένα, τι κάνεις στην ζωή σου, ποια είναι τα χόμπι σου και γιατί διάλεξες τους Hornets ανάμεσα σε όλες τις ομάδες του NBA; Καλημέρα Ματέο. Τον ελεύθερό μου χρόνο, συνήθως βλέπω σειρές ή αθλητικούς αγώνες.

Πριν την καραντίνα συνήθιζα να βγαίνω έξω επίσης, αλλά τώρα δεν είναι προτεραιότητα μου. Διάλεξα τους Hornets εξαιτίας του Kemba.

Ο Kemba είναι ο αγαπημένος μου παίκτης ακόμα και αυτή την στιγμή, και συνεχίζω να τον υποστηρίζω παρόλο που είναι στους Celtics.

Είναι πάντα συναρπαστικό από μεριάς μου να ανακαλύπτω νέες κουλτούρες.

Στα άρθρα μου, περιστασιακά χρησιμοποιώ κάποια παραδείγματα και παραδόσεις από την Ελληνική μυθολογία για να περιγράψω συγκεκριμένες καταστάσεις της στιγμής της Charlotte.

Εξωτερικά βλέπουμε την Ελληνική αρχιτεκτονική και όμορφα τοπία, αλλά προφανώς τα πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει.

Εκτός από την αρχιτεκτονική, έχει μείνει τίποτα από αυτήν την κουλτούρα στην Ελλάδα, ή το σκεπτικό της αγοράς έχει επηρεαστεί από το Αγγλοσαξονικό μοντέλο; Πως είναι γενικά ο κόσμος στην Ελλάδα σήμερα; Παρόλο που αυτές τις μέρες οι περισσότερες χώρες επηρεάζονται σε υψηλό βαθμό από το Αγγλοσαξονικό μοντέλο, το ελληνικό ταμπεραμέντο ζει και βασιλεύει και πιστεύω πως θα υπάρχει για πάντα ακόμα και αν επηρεαστούμε περισσότερο από αυτό.

Στις μέρες μας στην Ελλάδα, υπάρχουν πολλοί διαφορετικοί τύποι ανθρώπων.

Υποθέτω πως η πόλη που κατάγεσαι και η οικονομική σου κατάσταση είναι οι κύριοι παράγοντες για τον κόσμο στην Ελλάδα.

Πιστεύω πως υπάρχουν πολλοί οπισθοδρομικοί άνθρωποι στην Ελλάδα, ρατσιστές, ακροδεξιοί κλπ.

Παρόλα αυτά είναι ένα ποσοστό 5 με 10%, οπότε δεν μας αντιπροσωπεύει όλους.

Κάποτε ένας ιστορικός προπονητής ποδοσφαίρου, ο Franco Scoglio, στο τιμόνι της Τζένοα, χρησιμοποιούσε τον όρο ”red and blue people” για να ενώσει όλους τους Grifone και να γίνουν μια αγκαλιά όσοι αγαπούσαν αυτά τα χρώματα.

Τι πιστεύουν οι Έλληνες Teal & Purple των Hornets για τα τελευταία χρόνια; Ελπίζετε για το μέλλον, ή παρακολουθείτε την ομάδα επειδή την αγαπάτε; Όπως βλέπω στην σελίδα μας, οι περισσότεροι φανς της ομάδας ελπίζουν τουλάχιστον να μπούμε στα playoffs είτε αυτήν είτε στην χειρότερη περίπτωση του χρόνου.

Προσωπικά, και εγώ ελπίζω στην ομάδα αλλά ακόμα και να μην καταφέρουμε κάτι με τον Lamelo και τον Gordon, είμαι σίγουρος πως αυτή η ομάδα θα είναι πολύ fun to watch. Και πιστεύω πως οι περισσότεροι φίλοι της ομάδας όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα, αλλά παγκοσμίως δεν νοιάζονται ιδιαίτερα αν θα καταφέρουμε κάτι.

Οπότε υποθέτω πως η απάντησή μου στο ερώτημά σου είναι πως ναι, φυσικά θέλουμε η ομάδα να είναι ανταγωνιστική, και ναι νιώθουμε αισιοδοξία για το μέλλον, αλλά ακόμα και αν στο τέλος δεν καταφέρουμε κάτι, για πάντα θα στηρίζουμε την ομάδα.

Στην Ιταλία, οι Hornets είναι περιθωριακή ομάδα με λίγους υποστηρικτές.

Πως είναι τα πράγματα στην Ελλάδα; Είναι πιο δημοφιλής; Είναι οι συνήθεις ομάδες (Celtics, Lakers) ή οι ανερχόμενες (Warriors, Lakers) οι πιο δημοφιλής? Εδώ στην Ελλάδα, τα πάμε μια χαρά με βάση την επιτυχία μας.

Οι Lakers έχουν το μεγαλύτερο fanbase, αλλά πιστεύω πως οι περισσότεροι είναι bandwagoners.

Οι Celtics και οι Bulls έχουν επίσης μεγάλο fanbase, οπότε υποθέτω πως οι περισσότεροι υποστηρίζουν τις συνήθεις ομάδες.

Σε σχέση με άλλες μέτριες ομάδες όπως οι Kings και οι Timberwolves οι οποίοι δεν έχουν καν ενεργή ελληνική σελίδα, τα πηγαίνουμε αρκετά καλά.

Πιθανότατα θα μας έβαζα ανάμεσα στις θέσεις 20-25 για ελληνικό κοινό.

Φυσικά αυτό είναι βασισμένο στο Facebook, γιατί είναι αδύνατον για εμένα να γνωρίζω πόσος κόσμος υποστηρίζει την κάθε ομάδα.

Με το πέρασμα των χρόνων, έχουμε δει τόσους Ευρωπαίους παίκτες να πηγαίνουν στο NBA για να αναζητήσουν την μοίρα τους.

Στην Ελλάδα, το μπάσκετ είναι πιθανόν ένα απτα δημοφιλέστερα αθλήματα.

Το ντέρμπι Παναθηναϊκός – Ολυμπιακός, είναι ένα από αυτά τα ματς που δεν γίνεται να χάσεις. Παρόλο που το επίπεδο του μπάσκετ είναι πολύ καλό αυτά τα χρόνια, μόνο οι 3 Antetokounmpo έχουν καταφέρει να κάνουν το μεγάλο βήμα.

(Για να βρούμε κάποιον πριν από αυτούς πρέπει να πάμε πίσω στο 2014 με τον Παπανικολάου); Τι πιστεύεις για τον Kurt Rambis (Αμερικανός με ελληνικό διαβατήριο) που μας έδωσε την νίκη στο πρώτο μας ματς με τους Bulls (στο οποίο έπαιξε ο Jordan) ανάμεσα στις 2 ομάδες; Η αλήθεια είναι πως πολλά χρόνια πριν, ο Άρης και ο ΠΑΟΚ ήταν οι δυνάμεις της χώρας.

Ο Άρης είχε τον Νίκο Γκάλη εκείνη την εποχή, τον σπουδαιότερο Έλληνα μπασκετμπολίστα όλων των εποχών.

Τότε, το μπάσκετ ήταν πολύ δημοφιλές, σχεδόν το δημοφιλέστερο άθλημα εδώ, αλλά πλέον δεν είναι καν κοντά.

Το ποδόσφαιρο υπερέχει του μπάσκετ παρά το μεγάλο fanbase του NBA, και πολύς παραπάνω κόσμος δοκιμάζει την τύχη του στο ποδόσφαιρο πλέον πάρα στο μπάσκετ.

Πιστεύω πως αυτός είναι ο κύριος λόγος.

Ακόμα και οι οπαδοί του Παναθηναϊκού και του Ολυμπιακού, δεν νοιάζονται ιδιαίτερα για τις ομάδες τους στο μπάσκετ.

Εννοώ πως πριν την καραντίνα, και οι δυό τους θα πήγαιναν μόνο σε αγώνες της Euroleague ή στις μεταξύ τους αναμετρήσεις.

Λυπάμαι αλλά δεν έχω ακούσει για αυτόν.

Πιθανώς λόγω της ηλικίας μου.

Θα ψάξω σίγουρα για αυτόν.

Οι Hornets έζησαν στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 90 και την αυγή της νέας δεκαετίας τις καλύτερες μέρες της μικρής ζωής τους, μα έχουν περάσει 19 χρόνια και οι εμφανίσεις στην postseason ήταν ελάχιστες.

Γιατί νομίζεις πως έχει γίνει τόσο δύσκολο να κάνεις επαγγελματικό μπάσκετ σε καλό επίπεδο στην North Carolina; Πιστεύω πως έχουμε πάρει άθλιες αποφάσεις όλα αυτά τα χρόνια.

Πολύ κακά first round picks, αφήνουμε παίχτες να φύγουν λόγω cap space (π.χ Jeremy Lamb), πιθανότατα τα χειρότερα συμβόλαια στην λίγκα.

Επίσης είμαστε small-market team, οπότε δεν είναι εύκολο να πείσουμε μεγάλα ονόματα να έρθουν στην Charlotte.

Πιστεύω πως αυτός είναι ο κύριος λόγος που δυσκολευόμαστε να χτίσουμε μια ανταγωνιστική ομάδα.

Υ.Γ Ο Κώστας Κουφός έπαιξε επίσης στο NBA μέχρι το 2019 με τους Kings.

Έπαιξε επίσης στην Μινεσότα και στο Ντένβερ.
