Ci eravamo fermati allo scorso anno con le puntate di Discovery Charlotte tra impegni e la ricerca di cose o personaggi interessanti da proporvi.

Direi che – a proposito di persone interessanti – se avete visto qualche partita degli Hornets, vi sarà capitato di imbattervi in qualche inquadratura dove spuntava un iconico sombrero turchese con scritta viola.

Ebbene, questo fan è un iconico e assiduo frequentatore del nuovo The Hive, lo Spectrum Center tanto che ormai anche il commentatore Eric Collins lo cita come “uno di casa”.

Al secolo Hector Cortes, di professione insegnante di spagnolo, robotica ed informatica ma oggi siamo andati a intervistarlo per voi nei panni del super eroe che trasforma la sua indole mite in irrefrenabile tifo latino rispondendo solo al suo istinto e al nome di Sombreroman, più che un behind the mask andremo a scoprire chi c’è sotto al cappello e personalmente per la modestia e la gentilezza nelle risposte me lo levo.

Detto che nella seconda parte dell’articolo ci sarà anche l’intervista più asciutta in inglese (non adattata), bando alle ciance, vi lascio con Hector, la gente del North Carolina, la squadra di calcio, la storia delle scarpe di Batum e ovviamente con il famoso sombrero…

1D) Buongiorno Sig. Hector Cortes.

Noi tutti, tifosi degli Hornets, la conosciamo come “Mr. Sombrero” o “Sombreroman”, un super tifoso degli Hornets che supporta la squadra ogni sera allo Spectrum Center (grazie per questo!). Vorrebbe presentarts ai fan italiani che ancora non la conoscono e spiegare perché é diventato così appassionato e seguace degli Charlotte Hornets?

1R) Mi chiamo Hector Cortes, sono nato a Guadalajara, in Messico, ma mi sono trasferito definitivamente in California quando avevo 13 anni.

Sono cresciuto amando tutti gli sport e vivendo a Los Angeles e lì la mia squadra di basket è stata quella dei Los Angeles Lakers.

Alla fine mi sono sposato e mi sono trasferito nelle Carolina’s dove ho iniziato ad andare a vedere molte partite di basket degli Hornets, è lì che il mio amore per gli Hornets ha iniziato a crescere sempre di più, poi ho deciso di diventare un abbonato e ora sanguino in purple & teal!

Quali sono le ragioni o l’occasione che l’ha portata a Charlotte?

Anche lì guardava live le partite di Lakers/Clippers o Jazz?

2R) Sì, dopo che mi sono sposato con la mia bellissima moglie Bea, lei ha ottenuto una borsa di studio per frequentare la BYU (Brigham Young University) a Provo, nello Utah e abbiamo vissuto lì per due anni.

All’epoca seguivo i Lakers e guardavo tanto basket in TV, non ho mai avuto l’opportunità di andare a una partita di Jazz mentre vivevamo lì.

3D) Prima di diventare un fan dei Calabroni, era (come quasi tutti qui) un fan dei Bobcats.

Qual è il suo ricordo di quel periodo e di com’è sopravvissuto alla drammatica stagione da 7-59?

3R) Ricordo di essere stato molto entusiasta di poter guardare le partite dei Bobcats perché avevamo Eduardo Nájera, che all’epoca era il secondo giocatore messicano adottato dalla NBA, e per me è stato fantastico.

Ricordo anche quando arruolarono Kemba quell’anno e rimembro che fu una stagione molto dolorosa da guardare perché stavamo perdendo molte partite!

4D) Il passaggio dalle Linci Rosse ai Calabroni ha portato un nuovo entusiasmo in città.

Pensa che molti tifosi abbiano dimenticato quel periodo o sono consapevoli che veniamo dai bassifondi della classifica e abbiamo ancora tanta strada da fare?

4R) Le persone qui capiscono la storia dei nostri Calabroni, hanno molta passione per gli Hornets, ci sono molte persone che hanno smesso di guardare/andare alle partite perché si sono sentite ferite quando gli Hornets si sono trasferiti a New Orleans e non hanno apprezzato molto i Bobcats ma c’erano anche molti fan irriducibili che sono rimasti con le Linci Rosse durante tutti quegli anni dolorosi e ora stanno supportando i Calabroni.


5D) Cosa pensa che renda la città di Charlotte diversa dalle altre città americane che ha visitato fino ad ora?

5R) Le persone qui sono molto amichevoli, sono sempre molto gentili.

Anche lo stile di vita qui è molto rilassato.

Venendo da Los Angeles, dove trascorri in media 4 ore al giorno sulla tua auto combattendo il traffico e la rabbia della strada (la road rage, è proprio un sentimento di rabbia dovuta allo stress e alle condizioni, alle scorrettezze portate da altri automobilisti) avendo anche un costo oltraggioso della vita nella Città degli Angeli, essersi trasferirti in Carolina è stato come trovar il paradiso in terra!

6D) Quali sono i suoi sentimenti riguardo ai futuri progetti di Jordan e franchising?

Qual è l’atmosfera quest’anno allo Spectrum?

Immagino che il suo bel cappello iconico voglia rivelare la sua identità messicana.

6R) Adoro la direzione in cui sta andando il franchise, con i ragazzi che abbiamo ora, penso che abbiamo una squadra forte e il futuro è luminoso per gli Hornets.

L’atmosfera è elettrica allo Spectrum Center, ultimamente le persone entrano sempre di più nel vivo del gioco.

È emozionante sentire i fan urlare e urlare quando succedono grandi giocate, fantastiche schiacciate o quando le persone fischiano gli arbitri per aver fatto chiamate sbagliate, adoro quell’energia!

Sì, adoro portare il mio sombrero alle partite anche se non lo indosso per tutta la partita.

La gente pensa che lo indossi sempre ma (ovviamente) non è così.

Rispetto gli altri fan che siedono dietro di me e lo indosso solo quando non ci sono giocate live in corso.

7D) Qualcuno le ha mai detto che non riesce a vedere la partita quando le si rivolge?

A me era venuta in mente questa famosa scena di un simpatico film comico italiano: “Fracchia contro Dracula” anche se il cappello è di altro stampo.

Lol… Seriamente… Come vede oggi la gente di Charlotte in generale trovandosi con la presenza di molte persone non indigene che stanno formando la nuova città in continua espansione?

Secondo lei, cosa pensano i nativi di Charlotte di questa crescente presenza di non indigeni che stanno espandendo la città?

Non più, le persone mi chiedevano se sarei rimasto in piedi per la maggior parte del gioco o se avrei fatto rumore e essere stato rumoroso per tutto il gioco, ma ora le persone che siedono intorno a me, gli abbonati, loro chiedi di sedermi accanto o vicino a me perché a loro piace quando sono rumoroso e tifo per i Calabroni e a loro piace fare la stessa cosa.

Ci sono molti trapianti qui, ma sono tutti simpatici, si abituano al modo di vivere qui e si adattano. È doloroso quando riceviamo molti fan delle squadre avversarie che vanno tutti alle partite degli Hornets e fanno il tifo per le loro squadre, specialmente quando ci sono più di quei fan che di quelli degli Hornets!

Sono tutti molto accoglienti, non ho avuto brutte esperienze in tutti gli anni che ho vissuto qui, e sono qui dal 2006!

8D) Ha avuto modo di conoscere alcuni giocatori?

Conosce alcune storie divertenti su di loro?

8R) Sì, Kemba Walker, è uno dei ragazzi più simpatici e con i piedi per terra che abbia mai incontrato, ogni partita in casa si prendeva il tempo di parlare con i fan e firmare autografi.

In ogni singola partita casalinga firmava autografi oer i fan.

Nicolas Batum era un altro bravo ragazzo, parlavamo anche prima delle partite ed era super gentile e alla mano.

Storia divertente su Nicolas Batum, quando è arrivato per la prima volta agli Hornets gli ho chiesto le sue scarpe da gioco indossate dopo una partita e lui ha detto di no, poi ho continuato a infastidirlo in ogni altra partita finché non mi ha rivelato il motivo per il quale non mi ha deduto le scarpe, è molto superstizioso quando si tratta di scarpe indossate da gioco e diceva di usare lo stesso paio per tutta la stagione o forse anche per due stagioni.

Dopo aver rescisso il suo contratto e diventato un Clipper, alla prima occasione dei Clipppers a Charlotte, mi ha dato le scarpe che indossava mentre giocava per i Calabroni.

Ho quelle scarpe nella mia collezione ora ed occupano un posto molto speciale nella mia bacheca dei trofei.

9D) Sappiamo che lei è anche un grande sostenitore dei Carolina Panthers ed ora anche dei neonati Charlotte F.C. (la vediamo come “capo ultras”).

Cosa ne pensa dell’impatto che il calcio avrà sulla città?

Sarà un “vero affare”?

Qual è la sua squadra preferita in Europa?

9R) Sono un grande sostenitore di tutti gli sport di Charlotte, vado a molte partite dei Panthers, abbiamo anche una squadra di baseball della lega minore ed assisto anche a queste partite, quelle degli Charlotte Knights ed ora sono uno dei capi che fanno partire canti e cori per i Charlotte F.C. (dopo 4 partite è appena arrivaa la prima vittoria per 3-1 contro i New England revolution N.d.R.). Abbiamo giocato la nostra prima partita casalinga il 5 marzo ed è stata elettrica!

74.479 fan erano presenti per quella partita e ho avuto la fortuna di essere uno di quei fan.

Il 19 marzo, abbiamo giocato la seconda partita in casa, ma è stata la prima vittoria che abbiamo ottenuto che è stata epica, i fan erano fuori di testa, stavamo piangendo di gioia, è stato surreale, ho anche avuto un momento molto speciale alla fine della partita con l’allenatore Miguel Angel Ramirez, abbiamo finito per abbracciarci e volevo congratularmi con lui per la prima vittoria della squadra.

C’è una foto che qualcuno ci ha fatto ed è stato fantastico!

Le persone qui in Carolina volevano ed erano pronte da molto tempo per ottenere un franchising MLS e ora che ne abbiamo uno dimostrano quanto siamo appassionati di calcio.

Non ho una squadra europea preferita ma mi piace molto guardare il Real Madrid, il Barça, il Tottenham Hotspurs, l’Arsenal o il PSG solo per citarne alcune.

Ce lo fa un saluto in italiano?

1Q) We all know you as “Mr. Sombrero”, a Hornets super fan who supports the team every night at the Spectrum Center (thanks for that!).

Do you want to introduce yourself to Italian fans who don’t know you yet and explain why you are so passionate about the Hornets?

1R) Well, my name is Hector Cortes, I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico but relocated permanently to California when I was 13 years old. I grew up loving all sports and living in Los Angeles my go to basketball team was the lakers. Eventually got married and relocated to the Carolina’s where I started going to a lot of hornets basketball games, that’s where my love for the Hornets started to grow more and more, then I decided to become a season ticket holder and now I bleed Purple and teal!

2Q) We know from other interview (swarmandsting.com) that you have spent several years in California and Utah before arriving in Carolina.

What are the reasons or the occasion that brought you to Charlotte?

You used to watch Lakers/Clippers or Jazz games too?

2R) Yes, after I got married to my beautiful wife Bea, she got a scholarship to attend BYU (Brigham Young University) in Provo, Utah, and we lived there for two years.

I was following the Lakers then and watched lots of basketball on Tv, never had the opportunity to go to a Jazz game while we lived there.


3Q) Before you were a hornets fan, you were (like everyone here) a Bobcats fan.

What’s your memory of that time and how you survived to the 7-59 season?

3R) I remember being very excited to watch the Bobcats games because we had Eduardo Nájera, which was the 2nd Mexican born player in the NBA at the time, and to me, that was fantastic.

I also remember when they drafted Kemba that year and remember being a very painful season to watch as we were losing a lot of games!!!


4Q) The transition from Bobcats to Hornets has led to a new enthusiasm in the city.

Do you think that many fans have forgotten that period or are aware that we come from the slums of the standings and we still have a long way to go?

4R) People here understand the history of our hornets, they have a lot of passion for the Hornets, there’s lots of people that stopped watching/going to the games because they felt hurt when the Hornets relocated to New Orleans and didn’t like the Bobcats that much but there were also lots of hard core fans that stuck with the bobcats throughout all those painful years and now are supporting the hornets.


5Q) What do you think that makes the city of Charlotte different from the other US cities that you have visited till now?

5R) People here are very friendly, they’re always very nice.

Also the lifestyle here is very laid back.

Coming from Los Angeles where you spend 4hrs daily average on your car fighting traffic and road rage and the outrageous cost of living in LA, relocating to The Carolina’s was like heaven on earth!


6Q) What are your feelings about future Jordan’s and franchise projects?

What is the atmosphere this year at the Spectrum Center?

I guess that your nice and iconic hat reveals your Mexican identity.

I love the direction the franchise is going, with the guys that we have now, I think we have a strong team and the future is bright for the Hornets.

The atmosphere is electric at the spectrum center, lately, the people get more and more into the game.

It’s exciting to hear fans yell and scream when great plays or fantastic dunks happen or when people boo the refs for making bad calls, I love that energy!!!

And yes, I love taking my sombrero to the games, although I don’t wear it throughout the whole game.

People think I do wear all the time but I don’t.

I respect other fans that seat behind me and only wear it when there’s no live play going on.

7Q) Did anybody ever tell you that cannot see the match when he stands back to you?

Lol. Seriously..

How do you see the people of Charlotte in general find with the presence of many non-indigenous people who are forming the ever-expanding new city?

In your opinion, what do Charlotte native people think about this growing presence of non-indigenous people that are expanding the city?

7R) Not anymore, people used to ask me if I was going to be standing up most of the game or if I was going to making noise and being loud throughout the game, but now, the people that seat around me, season ticket holders, they request to seat next to or close to me because they like it when I’m loud and cheer on the Hornets and they like to do the same thing.

There are a lot of transplants here, but they’re all nice, they get used to the way of living here and they adapt.

It is painful when we get lots of fans from opposing teams all going to the hornets games and cheering for their teams especially when there are more of those fans than Hornets fans!

They are all very welcoming, I have not had bad experiences all the years that I have lived here, and I have been here since 2006!

8Q) Did you had the chance to know some players?

Do you know some funny stories about them?

8R) Yes, Kemba Walker, he’s one of the nicest and down to earth guy you will ever meet, every home game he would take the time to talk to fans and sign autographs.

EVERY single home game he would sign autographs for fans.

Nicolas Batum was another nice guy, we would talk too before games and he was super nice and approachable.

Funny story about Nicolas Batum, when he first came to the Hornets I asked him for his game worn shoes after a game and he said no, then I kept bugging him, every other game and he told me the reason why he didn’t gave his shoes away, he’s very superstitious when it comes to his game worn shoes and that he uses the same pair for the whole season and maybe 2 seasons.

After he got bought out his contract and he Became a Clipper, the very first game that the Clippers played against the Hornets at the Spectrum Center, he gave me the shoes that he used to wear while with the Hornets, I have those shoes in my collection now and hold a very special place in my trophy case.

9Q) We konw that you are also a big supporter of Carolina Panthers and now Charlotte F.C. (we see you as “capo ultras”).

What do you think of the impact that soccer will have on the city?

It will be a “real deal”?

What’s your favorite team in Europe?

9R) I am a big supporter of all Charlotte sports, I go to a lot of Panthers games, we also have a minor league baseball team that I go to games as well, they are the Charlotte Knights.

And now I am one of the CAPO’s that help with the chants with Charlotte FC.

We just had our first home game on March 5th and it was ELECTRIC!!!

74,479 fans were present for that game and I was lucky enough to be one of those fans.

Last night, March 19th, and we had out second home game but was the first win that we had and it was EPIC, fans were out of their minds, we were crying of joy, it was surreal, I also had a very special moment at the end of the game with the head coach Miguel Angel Ramirez, we ended up hugging and I wanted to congratulate him on the teams first victory and there’s a picture that someone took of us and it was awesome!!!!

People here in the Carolinas were ready for a long time to get a MLS franchise and now that we have one it shows how passionate we are about futbol!!!

And I don’t have a favorite European team but I really enjoy watching Real Madrid, Barça, Tottenham Hotspurs, Arsenal, PSG to name a few.
